Al-Aghwar Al-Shamaliyah, Oct. 29 (Petra) -- The Jordanian Citrus Agricultural Cooperative Society on Thursday urged citrus farmers whose orchards were unaffected by the recent rainstorm to pause harvesting for two days, Friday and Saturday, allowing impacted growers time to collect and market wind-dropped fruit.
President of the Society, Abdul Rahman Al-Ghazawi, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the initiative aims to demonstrate solidarity among farmers and mitigate economic losses following heavy winds that struck the Al-Aghwar Al-Shamaliyah (Northern Ghor) region on Tuesday.
Al-Ghazawi explained that halting harvest operations for two days will allow severely affected farmers to gather fallen produce and send it to central markets, helping prevent market oversupply, stabilize prices, and curb losses.
He emphasized the importance of collective compliance to ensure orderly supply chains to central wholesale markets and avoid market saturation over a short timeframe.
On Tuesday, strong winds caused significant fruit drop across several citrus orchards in Northern Ghor. Specialized technical committees from the Ministry of Agriculture are currently conducting field assessments to quantify the damage.
Al-Aghwar Al-Shamaliyah region includes approximately 66,000 dunams of land cultivated with citrus trees, generating roughly 82 percent of Jordan's total national citrus production.
